As part of Samsung’s initiative to promote environmentally-friendly efforts, the company has highlighted the energy efficiency of current SSD storage and DDR3 memory components. The use of higher-density DDR3 memory is said to reduce power consumption by up to 70 percent compared to DDR2 modules. The power savings is attributed to lower voltage requirements, as low as 1.35 volts, and the energy-efficient 40nm manufacturing technology.
SSDs are also claimed to offer power savings of up to 70 percent compared with their HDD counterparts. Samsung’s enterprise SSDs are capable of processing as much as 100 times the number of input/output operations (IOPs) per watt as a 15,000 rpm 1.5-inch HDD.
Although the higher cost of SSDs has proven prohibitive for many consumers, the total cost of ownership may soon be attractive for data center applications that place a higher priority on long-term power bills and maintenance costs.
Samsung has worked to improve its "green" image with other initiatives such as the Recycling Direct program that has already processed 2.8 million pounds of consumer electronics in the past year. Many of the company’s products meet ROHS and Energy Star qualifications.
