LG to launch 15-inch OLED TV in Korea this week
LG will make good on its promise to launch its 15-inch OLED TV in 2009 by launching it later this week in Korea. The set will be largest OLED commercially available, and cost the equivalent of about $2,500. At the same time, LG will invest into production facilities for the creation of these organic LED display panels.
The investment will be made alongside with Samsung mobile display on a new generation 5.5 fabrication line, which is due to come online in the first half of 2011. The capacity of this line is said to be 40,000 sheets per month, which themselves will be cut up into many more panels.
Thus far, only Sony offers an OLED TV with its 11-inch XEL-1. It’s available in the US priced at a similar $2,500. Sony has recently showed a 21-inch OLED prototype in Japan, though no release dates have been announced and are likely to be pushed back due to the poor economy. [via OLED-Display]
