PC markets remain strong in Russia & CIS

ChannelEMEA Research from GfK claims that notebook sales remain one of the major growth drivers of the Russian IT market. First quarter 2012 notebook sales witnessed a double digit year-on-year increase in unit terms. Despite this growth, GfK claimed that sales of notebooks at price points above US$800 declined for the second consecutive quarter.

In contrast, GfK noted strong demand for inexpensive entry-level notebooks as many households looked to purchase additional PC products for the family to use. Low process 15” notebooks performed well, with unit sales up by more than 20% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2012.

Sales of netbook and ultra-mobile units with screens less that 12.2” stagnated, showing zero growth or declines year-on-year in the first quarter of 2012. Unit sales of notebooks with 16” or larger screens soared 75% year-on-year.

Russian desktop PC unit sales declined 15% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2012. Advanced PC products such as nettops and all-in-in one computers fared better.

GfK stated: “All-in-one models grew by more than 60% in the first quarter [of 2012] and were around the same level as in the fourth quarter [of 2011]. With powerful processors, 20” to 22” screens and attractive pricing, all-in-one computers are proving to be fierce competition for notebooks bought for home use.”

GfK is an Event Partner at DISTREE Russia & CIS 2012, which takes place in St. Petersburg next week.
