Although global notebook shipments in the second half of 2012 are only estimated to grow 12% compared to the first, several notebooks ODMs are expected to see their shipment growth in the second half be better than the global average – Compal Electronics and Shuttle are both expected to achieve over 25% growth, while Quanta Computer and Pegatron Technology will enjoy 15-18% growth – as some of these ODMs have lower first-half comparison bases, while some are enjoying clients' increasing or shifting orders, according to Digitimes Research senior analyst Joanne Chien.
Quanta will enjoy increased orders from Apple and Asustek Computer, while Compal is benefiting from Lenovo and Dell's shifted orders. Pegatron's shipments will also grow as its clients started increasing their orders in the second quarter and Shuttle will benefit from strong demand in Latin America and other emerging markets.
However, achieving strong shipment growth in the second half does not necessarily mean that the makers will also achieve on-year growth in 2012. Digitimes Research estimates that Pegatron (25%), Inventec (11%) and Shuttle (27%) will all achieve double-digit percentage growth in 2012, and Quanta and Wistron will both achieve 5%. But Compal, Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) and Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) will all see single-digit percentage drops.
Other major events in the notebook ODM industry in the second half include Samsung Electronics' notebook outsourcing to Taiwan makers and Lenovo's increasing in-house production. In the second half, Samsung is expected to outsource 20% of its notebook production to Taiwan makers, while Lenovo's strategy of increasing its in-house production rate, although not significantly affecting Taiwan makers now, is expected to start showing an impact in the next 2-3 years.
