Samsung Electronics has been developing a line up of notebooks for launch in June and the second half of 2013 ranging from consumer to business use and from entry-level to high-end, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.
Samsung shipped 13.8 million notebooks in 2013, approximately the same as in 2011, and aims to ship 16-17 million units in 2013, the sources indicated.
Although Samsung's development of multiple models increases costs for developing corresponding components for makers, Taiwan-based component makers are mostly willing to join the supply chain because they are optimistic about sales of Samsung notebooks, the sources said. Another reason is that Samsung's in-house and outsourced production sites for notebooks are in eastern China where most Taiwan-based component makers have set up factories, and thus can hike utilization rates at existing capacities, the sources indicated.
