Samsung Electronics has cut its notebook component orders for September to about half of its original forecast and the company reportedly may also reduce its shipment forecast for 2013 to only 13 million units, compared to 13.8 million units in 2012, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.
Samsung did not comment on the sources' claim.
Samsung originally expected its 2013 notebook shipments to grow 15-20% on year, but, like other first-tier vendors, is also facing the notebook market woes.
Currently, most of Samsung's notebook production is handled at the company's plants in Suzhou, China. Although Samsung outsourced a small portion of its notebook production to Compal Electronics in 2012, the Korea-based vendor already has terminated the partnership and does not have plans to outsource any notebook production any time soon.
Samsung was the seventh-largest notebook brand vendor in 2012, enjoying a strong shipment growth in the year, especially in the Latin America market. Samsung was the third-largest notebook brand vendor in Brazil, trailing behind Positivo and Acer.
