Intel and notebook brand vendors have been promoting 2-in-1 devices for several years, but the product line has not been performing as expected. However, with demand for Surface products starting to grow recently, and Apple's iPad Pro attracting consumer attention, notebook players are starting to become optimistic about the segment and are planning to release more new products to satisfy demand.
The iPad Pro, Surface Pro 3 and Galaxy Note 5 all support a stylus for input which is expected to become a new trend for 2-in-1 products.
Intel's Universal Stylus Initiative (USI) alliance has already started establishing a stylus standard that can be used across platforms. Lenovo and Dell are both planning to release 2-in-1 and notebook products that support USI.
Currently, Microsoft's Surface Pro 3's stylus uses a solution from the company's acquired N-Trig, while Samsung is partnering with Japan-based Wacom, which is a member of USI. Players including Waltop, Egalax_Empia Technology, Elan Microelectronics (EMC) and FocalTech are also members of USI.
