Vendors to release 2-in-1s with stylus in 3Q16

Rising demand for 2-in-1 devices has increased the adoption of stylus support by brand vendors. In addition to Microsoft and Apple, Huawei, Acer, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Dell and Asustek Computer are also planning to release 2-in-1 devices with a stylus for the third quarter.

Thanks to strong demand for Microsoft's Surface Pro series, Asustek's T100 series 2-in-1 devices and Apple's iPad Pro helping to heat up the market, 2-in-1 device shipments grew 140% on year in 2015 and are expected to continue to rise to above 20 million units in 2016.

Intel is also offering its Turnkey Program to partners in its China Tech Ecosystem (CTE) to assist them crossing into the 2-in-1 device market with certified hardware and software solutions.

For stylus development, Intel has cooperated with Japan Display (JDI), Sharp, Lenovo, Synaptics, Atmel, Waltop and Japan-based Wacom and established the Universal Stylus Initiative (USI).

Instead of entry-level models, brand vendors have turned to push high-end 2-in-1 devices with designs similar to Microsoft's Surface Pro. These new 2-in-1 devices will feature higher-specification hardware and features such as stylus, and priced at a higher level, targeting mainly the enterprise sector.

Waltop has already received stylus orders from Acer and Fujitsu for their new 2-in-1 devices and is striving for orders from Asustek and Dell.

Since is no unified stylus technical standard, Intel is planning to establish one via USI and will expand the standard to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.
