Lenovo Ships 5.46 Million Notebooks in 3Q10

China-based notebook vendor Lenovo shipped 5.46 million notebooks worldwide in the third quarter of 2010, making it the fourth largest vendor in the quarter and only 600,000 units away from Dell for third, according to sources from component suppliers citing figures from IDC.

The sources pointed out that the estimates of orders from Lenovo in the first quarter of 2011 are very strong as China will have Lunar New Year holidays in the quarter and the company's partners including Compal Electronics, Wistron and Quanta Computer are all expected to benefit.

In 2011, Wistron will mainly manufacture Lenovo's enterprise-based ThinkPad notebooks and will have a small portion of consumer-based IdeaPad notebook orders, while Compal and Quanta will mainly manufacture IdeaPad models with Compal having more volume than Quanta.

Lenovo's third-quarter notebook shipments had a 38% growth on-year, the strongest among the global top-five players. Since Lenovo currently has over a 30% share of China's notebook market and China is expected to see the strongest notebook shipment growth in 2010 with over 20% on-year growth, the company's notebook shipments in the future are expected to continue climbing along with China's notebook market.
