Toshiba heads Greenpeace eco-rating
Toshiba moved to the first position in the ecological rating among electronics vendors, published by Greenpeace in March 2008. For the last quarter the company improved its standards in a series of parameters estimated by Greenpeace. In the general rating it gathered 7,7 of 10 points, gaining the leading position.
First of all Toshiba improved its characteristic “Vendor’s personal responsibility”, paying much attention to the utilization and recycling of its own products. The company pulled of the coalition concerning the adoption of the law that imposes responsibility on the consumer not on the vendor itself.
The company is inclined to tighten control over the use of harmful chemical substances. By 2009 Toshiba plans to fully abandon the use of PVC, and brominated flame retarders in the whole product line. Even now a range of Toshiba’s products is produced without PVC and bromides and gets certification EcoMark.
Ecological responsibility has become the fundamental principle of Toshiba Corporation. The company works on the reduction of the negative impact on the environment during the development, production, transportation and storage of its products. In 2003 Toshiba established its own ecological prize awarded within the Corporation for outstanding achievements in ecology.
